A-And…he…sow…
“Saw.”
“Yeah, saw. A…bu….butter…fly…Butterfly.
“Very well.”, Owl judged, closing the book. “You are making a real progress, Piglet. Soon you will be able to read a whole paragraph alone.”
Piglet smiled. “D-Do you think so?”
“Of course! Have a biscuit, you earned it. You’ve been practicing these days, am I right?”
“Oh, yes! I-I had to distract myself from the…oh, well, the-the madness of these days somehow and…Oh, m-my friends have been ve-very nice helping me but I-I’d like to start reading on my own.”
“I understand.”, Owl turned his head to see the window behind him (only he knew how to do that, it was something that fascinated the little swine). A soft sound came from outside, though Piglet couldn’t identify it. “Oh, it seems a rather blustery day is coming…”
“A-A blustery day? A-Are you sure?”
“It seems so.”
“Oh, b-but I thought those only ha-happened in autumn…”
“Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Any day can be a blustery day, little piglet. You see, wind is caused by differences in atmospheric pressure. When the sun warms the Earth’s surface the atmosphere warms too, and that makes the air weigh less, rising. The cool air, on the other hand, is above, as it has more weight, and, so, it moves in, is heated and replaces the warm air. That is what makes wind blow. At least, this is what my grandfather told me. He knew about lots of things and he was always interested in the air. After all, he was a pilot. In 1902 he participated in the Queen’s anniversary blah blahblah…
Piglet had to admit that he had understood nothing he had said, even if he had tried to, and ended up stopping listening to what he said a while ago. Chewing the snack he had offered to him, he thought instead about those last weeks, the sad ending of that story Christopher Robin read them about girl who sold matches, and had time to wonder if he had enough milk at home. When he finished, Owl was still talking, now, who knew why, about his cousin’s problem with his feathers. It looked like he was going to be like that for a long, long time. Piglet liked Owl a lot…but he couldn’t sit and listen to his verbosity.
“Uhm…Owl”, he interrupted rising his hand politely. “I-I just remember P-Pooh and I agreed to go to the ri-river today. Uh…I-I think he’s waiting for me. Thank you for the lesson and the s-s-snacks!”
“Huh? Oh, yes, of course, of course. Go. I’ll see you tomorrow. Have fun and keep practicing!”
“T-Thank you, Owl! B-Bye!”
With a polite smile and a nod, Piglet left the house and made his way home. He turned his head a few times to the window just to be sure that Owl wasn’t watching from there because he could notice he was walking the opposite direction. Since he wasn’t, he kept walking.
Now that he was outside, Piglet noticed that Owl was right: wind was blowing with more and more force each step he took. One more reason to leave Owl’s house: last time things didn’t end up quite well…Remembering that day and thinking about how problematic was to be so little and light, made him come up with a solution.
Piglet smiled, walking faster. Oh, no, that time he wouldn’t fly like a kite. He opened the stitches in his side a bit, enough to let little stones be introduced into his inside. He took all those he could find around, until he found himself weighty. Then, he made the best knot he could do with the thread so that they wouldn't escape.
Just to test the effectiveness of his idea, he stood there and waited for a good blow. A fresh breeze came but it was almost nothing, in fact, Piglet found it very pleasant. He had to wait for more or less fifteen minutes until the wind blew with enough force to be a challenge. When that happened, Piglet closed his eyes, not really wanting to see what would happen. The air made his long ears wave and the coldness that was nice a while ago now seemed freezing. But he was still there.
Piglet opened his eyes and looked below. His feet were still on earth, not floating with the rest of his body. He was safe!
“H-Hooray!”, he exclaimed. Oh, now he wouldn’t end up in any tree or who knew where! He was safe!
Satisfied, he tried to keep walking.
Tried, because he found himself too heavy to move. He tried, he really tried but his little legs couldn’t support all those stones inside his body.
He ended up falling to the ground. When he tried to stand up, one, two, seven, ten times, he found himself completely unable to do it. He couldn't even reach the knot he had done to get rid of the stones. He looked around in search for any kind of help.
“…H-Hello? Pooh?  Tigger? Are you there Eeyore? …C-Can somebody help me?”
Only the wind replied to him.
“Oh, d-dear…I guess it wasn’t a good idea after all…”
